Have You Ever Asked God What He Wants?

For years, I thought I was seeking God’s will.

I prayed before difficult decisions. I asked Him to bless my work. I wanted to honor Him with my career in medicine.

But looking back, I realized something surprising.

Most of the time, I had already decided what I thought my life should look like.

Then I asked God to bless the conclusions I had already reached.

Can you relate?

As healthcare professionals, we are trained to gather information, analyze it, make the best decision possible, and move forward confidently. That mindset serves us well in medicine.

But what if we’ve unknowingly carried that same approach into our relationship with God?

Last year, while attending a business conference, I was challenged with a question that completely changed my life:

“What is my big dream according to Your will, Lord?”

It seems like such a simple question.

Yet I realized I had rarely asked it.

Instead, I had spent years trying to figure out my purpose with my own understanding.

When I finally became still and asked, God answered.

Not with confusion.

Not with silence.

With remarkable clarity.

In that moment, hope came rushing back.

More importantly, I began discovering something even greater than the answer itself.

I began discovering who God really is.

He was no longer Someone I simply believed in.

He became Someone I could actually talk with.

Someone I could ask questions.

Someone I could brainstorm with.

Someone who wanted to partner with me in the details of everyday life—including medicine.

That realization changed everything.

It changed how I made decisions.

It changed how I viewed my calling.

It changed how I practiced medicine.

And perhaps most surprisingly, it changed how I understood my own identity.

I wonder how many of us are carrying burdens we were never meant to carry simply because we’ve never stopped long enough to ask God what He wants.

Maybe the breakthrough you’re praying for doesn’t begin with finding another answer.

Maybe it begins with asking a different question.

That’s the journey we’re taking together through White Coat Revival—learning not just to work for God, but to work with Him.

Let me ask you this:

If God answered one question for you today with unmistakable clarity, what would you ask Him?

Mine was:

“What is my big dream according to Your will?”
