The Best Continuing Education I’ve Ever Taken

Last week, I shared the question that changed my life.

“What is my big dream according to Your will, Lord?”

That question became the pivot point of my life.

But looking back, I’ve realized the question itself wasn’t what transformed me.

It was what happened next.

For the past two and a half years, I’ve become captivated by one pursuit: getting to know God.

Not just believing in Him. Not just praying to Him. But truly understanding who He is, what Jesus accomplished through the cross, and what it means to live today as a child of God filled with His Holy Spirit.

As healthcare professionals, we understand the value of continuing education. Every year we devote hours to earning CME or CEU credits because we know expanding our knowledge makes us better clinicians.

Then one day I asked myself…

What if I invested even more time learning to know the One who created healing in the first place?

Scripture says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)

And again, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7 NKJV)

Those verses have come alive for me.

I didn’t need bigger faith. Jesus already told us that faith as small as a mustard seed is enough (Matthew 17:20).

What I needed was a greater understanding of the God in whom I already believed.

Then something unexpected began to happen.

I didn’t want this new understanding to remain head knowledge. Like every good clinician, I wanted to know if it could actually be lived.

So, as I was gaining new understanding, I began putting what I was learning into practice. I started experimenting with God.

I intentionally invited God into clinical situations. I asked Him questions. I paused long enough to listen. “Be Still & Know” (Psalm 46:10) became my new life motto. I expected the Holy Spirit to participate in patient care with me.

What happened next completely changed my understanding of medicine.

I watched medical miracles unfold before my eyes. I witnessed healing that science alone couldn’t fully explain. Thoughts would suddenly enter my mind with remarkable clarity — insights I hadn’t previously considered, yet which proved to be exactly what was needed. Time after time, I experienced what it looked like to partner with God rather than carry the responsibility of my patient outcomes by myself.

I can honestly say…

I will never think about medicine the same way again.

I didn’t become a different clinician.

I discovered I had a different way — a way that Jesus demonstrated — a way where I have an omniscient Partner who co-labors with me.

Many of those stories are woven throughout the White Coat Revival book. They aren’t stories about what I accomplished. They’re stories about what became possible once I stopped practicing medicine independently, got still, invited God into every patient encounter, and began practicing medicine differently — with God instead of for God.

Today I’d like to offer you a challenge.

For every hour you spend expanding your medical knowledge this year, consider investing even more time expanding your knowledge of God.

Study His Word.

Learn His character.

Ask Him questions.

The more I trust Him, the more naturally I partner with Him.

And the more I partner with Him, the more I watch Him reveal His goodness through the beautiful calling of medicine.
